Battery Prices Drops Slows

BloombergNEF reports that volume-weighted average battery prices only fell 6% to $132 per kilowatt-hour in 2021. This is down from $140/kWh in 2020 (in real 2021 dollars). The 6% drop was less than an expected 9% drop. Bloomberg is expecting battery prices to go up slightly in 2022 before returning to about current levels in…
Battery Prices Drops Slows

BloombergNEF reports that volume-weighted average battery prices only fell 6% to $132 per kilowatt-hour in 2021. This is down from $140/kWh in 2020 (in real 2021 dollars). The 6% drop was less than an expected 9% drop.

Bloomberg is expecting battery prices to go up slightly in 2022 before returning to about current levels in 2023.

Bloomberg still expects battery prices to drop to less than half by 2030.

There are reports that the lowest cost LFP (Iron phosphate) batteries are currently about $60-65 per kwh. BYD and CATL are the lowest cost LFP battery makers. BYD raised prices by 20% for any batteries they sell. BYD uses a lot of its own battery supply for their own cars.

The Limiting Factor and others believe that an LFP (Iron phosphate) version of the 4680 battery could reach $30 per kwh.

The high demand for batteries and increased pricing power for battery makers gives an advantage to car companies that have their own battery factories.

Criticality for Both High Temperature Pebble Bed Reactors

Both nuclear reactors of the High-Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor-Pebble-bed Module (HTR-PM) at the Shidaowan plant in China’s Shandong province have reached criticality for the first time. The HTR-PM has two 250 MW thermal reactors that drive a single 210 MWe turbine. Commercial 600 MWe pebble bed reactors (6×250 MWt, total 655 MWe) will follow. the…

The Rise and Stall of China

Long time readers of Nextbigfuture know that I have been optimistic about China’s economy for well over two decades. Those were correct and accurate tracking and forecasts. There would be complaints that tracking the situation every few months was boosterism for China. Well the change has happened. China’s economy has basically stalled out. China’s economy…

D-Wave Shifting to Gate Model Quantum Computer

D-Wave Systems revealed their next-generation quantum computing platforms will include both annealing and gate-model quantum computers. This is a significant shift because they were the pioneers in quantum computing but used something like an analog computer, called an annealer. D-Wave is responding to major competition with billion-dollar valuations and hundreds of millions in funding. IonQ…
